[Pen-l] school choice
I too am guilty of the thinking that David attributes to us.
Suppose my daughter's school proposes to give her the chance to have one of
the teachers devote full time to tutoring her off campus. I selfishly
appreciate the opportunity to improve her education. My daughter may enjoy
the attention that the teacher will give her, but the rest of the students
will be deprived of the teacher's time and energy.
Economists would say that we need to take account of the opportunity cost
of the special treatment for my daughter. What does her choice mean for
the rest of the students? I don't think that the debate can be settled in
terms of individual choice.
