[Pen-l] RE: charter schools

"I've been publishing a newsletter for over 20
years, so I have a lot of experience with the postal service. It works
very well, they deliver everywhere, and it's cheap. FedEx doesn't go
everywhere, is quite expensive, and you often have to stand in line
there too."
A couple of months ago I wanted to mail a small paperback book to Indonesia. I went to FedEx and they wanted $87.00. When I balked, the clerk said that she could send it via U.S> mail for $40, or that I could go to the post office myself and mail it for $20. I went to the post office and mailed to book (which was received a couple of weeks later) for a little under $9.00.
The efficiency of public services is more likely to be a political issue than an economic issue. There's nothing inherently uneconomical about services set up to serve people rather than to generate a profit.
I long to see the day when humans will realize that prosperity is possible without profits.
