Don't know if this is a lead or not but a good story anyway. My father
was shop steward in one of the old CIO unions that had anti-sexual
harrassment provisions. It actually did not come from the top. The
women angrily told him they were sick of what they had to put up with
so he added it to the list of demands, and ultimately won it. It also
had affirmative action provision on both race and gender. That was a
suggestion from the top, but one that the members were very
enthusiastic about.. This was mid 50's don't know what Union, but the
company made wire on spools. It was LA. Most the union members were
Latino. I know that occasionally anti-union thugs would try to ambush
the workers off duty. But everyone had large families, and their
brothers and cousins and friends would step in and the thugs came off
the worse for it.
Don't know if mid-50's were anything like earliest or not. If it turns
down they were I can probably track the down the union name. I know
Shay's nickname in those days was "The Mayor of City Terrace" so the
City Terrace must have been what the neighborhood he lived in was
called.
