I'm more of a 70s guy, but my impression was that a lot of demos
involved the effort to meet people of the opposite (or same) sex. The
fact that they didn't read Marx is secondary to the fact that they
scared Nixon _et al_. The actual raising of consciousness came later,
as people tried to make sense of what in heck was going on. (How could
our democratically-elected governments do such horrible things, in
Vietnam, in Chicago in 1968, etc.?)
