I don't dispute that demand for food stamps has increased and it is just another sign of the economic malaise of the US, I merely wish to point out that totals probably vastly understate the need.

these two factors are important. But have they gotten stronger or
weaker in recent years? if not, then the increase in the demand for
food stamps says a lot.
