There are two issues here: diplomas and education. But they keep getting
confused.
The movement away from universities that "expand the mind" could be a
huge gift to the left. If people want a humanistic eduction, they could
get one fairly cheaply through discussion groups/classes, off the grid
as it were.
There are thousands of disaffected intellectuals that could make a
living teaching -- especially during retirement. For example, me. A
class of thirty, paying 100 dollars a month, could keep me fed and
sheltered in my old age and get a cheap education in exchange. You could
organize teachers/students via online Craig's list type signups and make
it work. The religious right has figured out how to do that, why not us?
The fact that the universities have failed is simply a symptom of a
failing culture/state. It has happened before. Given the drift of
"development" in the humanities in the last thirty years, this is not
surprising.
I suspect that one outcome of the general immiseration to come is that
fewer jobs will actually require degrees and there will be far more
on-the-job training. Especially for non-science jobs.
That's OK. We can build something around and out of that.
Joanna
