The USSR did fight a real and important war with Japan during this
period, won it, and got its troops back to the west just in time for the
German invasion. It's also argued by some that the USSR would have
united with France and England had they been willing to fight for
Czechoslovakia. My knowledge is skimpy, so don't take this as at all
authoritative.
