Regarding Madoff, it is really unclear so far what he did with the money he collected, but if he did nothing more than operate a traditional Ponzi scheme -- recirculate the new money to the old investors, while skimming a small percentage off the top, the net result may be that his "investors" will end up better than if he had actually invested the money in equities, which have lost 40-50% this year.  If so, he should be celebrated as fund manager of the year.
