Re: [Pen-l] The looming battle over EFCA
On Dec 8, 2008, at 12:26 PM, Louis Proyect quoted:
Now, facing the worst financial crisis since the Depression, the
Democrats have an unparalleled opportunity to link labor law reform
to their broader economic recovery efforts. As economist Dean Baker,
from the Center for Economic and Policy Research, points out, “If
workers are able to form unions and get their share of productivity
gains, it could once again put the country on a wage-driven growth
path, instead of growth driven by unsustainable borrowing.”
That all sounds so reasonable, but what about the class struggle?
Capital will not give in easily on this. And since the unions have
shown themselves willing to spend $100 million promoting Democrats
while getting little or nothing in return - year after year! - what
clout do they really have?
