Correct -- except that to even use the term _McCarthyism_ here is
misleading. The Great Red Hunt got started under Truman and primarily as
a result of actions by the Truman Administration and by Democrats in
Congress. And even during McCarthy's one-man rampage the _real_ damage
was being done by the apparatus established under Truman. McCarthy go
his headlines (and generated his gravediggers) by his attempt to use
that red hunt for quite different purposes (mostly personal
aggrandizement), in the course of which his main targets were not Reds
but but such major Cold Warriors as Dean Acheson. When awareness of the
actual role of the DP in u.s. history becomes more widespread (if it
ever does), "McCarthyism" is a word that can be marked obsolete in the
dictionaries.
