I presume this is Cato the younger. If so, beware. Most of the calls for
"freedom" or "liberty" during he late Roman Republic were code for the
"liberty" of Senators to squeeze the peasantry without limit. What got
Julius Caesar in trouble with his peers was that he took the position
that there too heavy-handed a squeeze would kill the goose. This may or
may not apply to Cato, and I don't even remember whether Addison's
tragedy was based on the younger or the older -- but if the younger,
that's not a good sign either. (It's been too long since I read Roman
history for me to be confident of what I'm saying here.) Stoics _tended_
to be a bit more exploitative than Epicureans, but that's just a rule of
thumb too, not necessarily applicable to a given case.
