I haven't the slightest idea what Tom is saying here.

But it's possible that Obama's candidacy didn't simply drain off
resources. It could have actually gotten new people involved in
politics. (Similarly, Nader's run in 2000 didn't simply drain off
votes from Gore. It also brought in new voters.) The problem with the
new people, I'm afraid, is that their movement is atomized, overly
dominated by the DP, and a flash in the pan.
