Re: [Pen-l] Heidegger and Nazism [was: Exchange on I.F. Stone
Greetings Economists,
Hi Ravi, I don't think one can call it a smear to refer to Heidegger
as a Nazi. The main point for me is why his philosophy would allow
him to go down this road. You can't fault Obama on the one hand as a
closet righty, and find Heidegger free of the not just association
with Nazism, but participation in the party itself. For example the
racist position of the party cannot be ignored.
Being is so broad in Heidegger, so lacking in meaning because he can
play with nothingness as if it was saying something in a philosophical
sense. He can't materially make sense of the world via an
undefinable, or unknowable 'nothing'. Hence, attaching himself to
Nazism is logical action to promote an empty position.
What do I do with being? Is it knowledge? Is thinking? What is being?
Were I on the Soviet side and we captured Heidegger I would certainly
have imprisoned him. His philosophy in some fundamental sense must
free him from Nazism, from letting oppression roll on. I may not have
shot him for crimes against society. But I would very strongly
criticize him for faulty philosophical foundations. In other words I
expect a philosophy to free us from oppression. This is not the place
to present deep arguments. But this list can offer at least clear
opinion.
thanks,
Doyle Saylor

Hence my parenthetical point that the Heidegger smear is more
"technically accurate".
