Right. As an "intellectual" newspaper, the NYT allows for a variety of
opinions, as long as they don't stray too far from the current
orthodoxy. A crucial thing that would bar someone from the NYT is
criticism of Israel, unless it's of the mild sort defined by current
mainstream Israeli politics. (It's okay to favor the program of "Peace
Now," I'd guess, but a one-state solution is out.)
