Well, until you can overcome that skepticism you should give up
proposing more things for the government to do.

I'm stil of the opinion that nothing much seriously responsive to the
major social and economic 'problems' can be achieved through 'normal'
politics rather than direct action outside of electoral politics.
Whether the latter is possible in the near future is of course itself
questionable, but nowheres near as questionable as hoping Congress &
Administration will do anything because policy wonks recommend it.
