to a large extent, making a revolution is not a matter of choice. A
revolutionary situation happens (Russia loses WW1 and peasants &
workers revolt) and then leaders have to decide what to do about it
(let chaos reign, allow another political force to win, or try to mold
the situation to serve one's goals and constituencies). In other
words, Lenin and the Bolshies weren't "betting on the future" as much
as deciding that the kind of future they think that they can create
was superior to the other possible futures.
