The New York Times has a fascinating article about Berea College, a school that has no tuition, but expects students to work 10 hours a week. The school has a healthy endowment of $1 billion, but seems to use it for supporting education rather than fancy buildings.
This was how Black Mountain College worked. A century from now, scholars will be writing about the impact of Black Mountain while the ivy league will be a mere footnote.
interesting. i missed michael's initial post and will have to go dig it up. i have a friend and former colleague who i believe had two daughters attend berea and it seems to work quite well. he spent a good part of a sabbatical year there, as well. i admit i would be (almost) happy if students committed to ten hours a week on their coursework. lol.
