adding to my own missive, my historical research suggests that the
only truly "progressive" side of JFK was the spirit of idealism and
hope that his youth, charm, yadda yadda provoked. The contrast between
idealism and reality (e.g., the Vietnam war) helped produce the
ferment of the 1960s. That was a mixed phenomenon, of course, but it
did involve some good possibilities.
