There was a news item that to me vividly illustrated the nature of the
Ownership Society that we now live in. The Boston Celtics team
recently won the NBA basketball championship and Bush called to
congratulate.

He didn't call the players on the team or the coach or manager. He
instead, in his infinite wisdom, chose to call and congratulate the
Owner of the Celtics franchise. Now that must have been one awkward
conversation..

Wyc Grousbeck was sitting at his desk Wednesday when a call came in.

"I forgot about the whole White House connection," said the Celtics
principal partner, who heard George Bush's voice on the other end of
the line.

"Completely forgot, so that helped it sink in. He said, we really want
to congratulate you on how your team played. You guys really made the
city proud.'

"He enjoyed the game and he really wanted to congratulate us. It was a
very gracious, generous phone call."
