[Pen-l] Obama remarks
Serious question regarding the Obama remarks regarding guns and
religion. I think it is hard to dispute that there is a general
right/left dispute over gun ownership, but why? Is there something in
Marxism that speaks to gun ownership? Is there a relevance of gun
ownership to economic class? I really have a hard time conceptualizing
why there is such a strong correlation between opposition to gun
ownership and other left-wing views.

CB: On the Marxist aspect, in many situation, such as Cuba or
Venezuela, Marxists support arming the working class substantially. In
_The State and Revolution_ Lenin formulates "an armed organization of
the population".
To be more historically and nationally concrete, as to US sports gun
ownership, that doesn't seem to be identical with the political arming
of the mass of the population. It seems to be more fun with guns , than
political self-determination with guns as in 1793. Many Marxists might
say that in balancing the value of gun fun against the many gun murders
and injuries that come with widespread possession of guns as in the US
today, it is probably not worth it to have so many guns in so many
peoples' hands. Better to give up the gun fun for the sake of so many
victims. Shooting deer and target bullseyes is not that valuable to
society with the unavoidable concomittent.
Doesn't some gun fun involve letting off steam, anger, bitterness in a
sport ? Isn't some of that steam from frustration with economic anxiety
, instead of directing steam at the economic system ? Isn't this true of
gun fun in the city as well as the country , in big cities as well as
small towns ?
