Stanford legal scholar and geek celebrity Lawrence Lessig announced  
today that he will not be running for Congress in an upcoming special  
election to replace the late Rep. Tom Lantos (D-CA). At the urging of  
an enthusiastic netroots movement, Lessig had formed an exploratory  
committee to consider the possibility of a congressional run, as he  
discussed with Ars Technica last week. But in a video posted both at  
his own blog and the Lessig '08 site, he explains that there would be  
no way, in the scant time remaining before the election, to mount an  
effective campaign against popular California State Senator Jackie  
Speier, long considered a shoe-in for the seat.
