According to the article the "The top fifth of American households
earned an average of $149,963 a  year in 2006.... they spent  $69,863 on
food, clothing, shelter, utilities, transportation, health care and
other categories of consumption. The rest of their income went largely
to taxes and savings. Say 40% went to taxes (probably an overestimate)
that would leave a savings difference of nearly $20,000 per year. That
means the top fifth will be able retire while they still have their
health. Those below the top fifth and especially those in the bottom
fifth will have lower life expectancies and will be more likely to work
at low paying jobs in their "golden years." There are other differences
as well but I thought this one was worth pointing out.
