Doyle; His election validates moving left. That is a very limited move, but one could suppose that global warming will crop up on his agenda, or Clinton. Clinton is likely to resist too radical climate impact on the energy industry just like Bill put Kyoto out with vague promises.

Or the economy, do they allow more bubbles?  Or Iraq, can they
seriously confront the military economy?

I would guess that on the economy, the environment, and the military,
forces are building in a left direction.  The weaker economy pushes
class divisions.  The bad environment moves people toward climate
fears and reactions.  Especially around energy.  And the failure of
the military in Iraq and Afghanistan hardly gives the hard right much
to fall back on around a strong military.

Hence a debate about the stability of the U.S. and what that looks
like.  What is there for a the left to work upon?
