this is the guy on pen-l that i responded to yesterday.  he replied respectfully to me and we may even get together!  after i compose a response, i'll bcc u 1.

below is posted on pen-l (progressive economists network-list) and is one of his occasional change-of-pace, thought-stimulating breaks.

haven't read your responses to that yet.  too busy with your other stuff, which allowed me to think about you all morning.

[quite a bit dated, but still... ] "God has created man and woman and
tied them together by mutual attraction; but man has tried to keep
them asunder by dividing their labor into man's specialist and woman's
generalist tasks. He may have aimed at securing the lion's share of
leisure and comfort for himself, but that sexist division of labor had
three other undesirable effects as well: it has tended to limit the
sexes' mutual attraction and enjoyment of each other's company to the
physical sphere, it has deprived women of economic independence, and
it has deprived men of the stimulus satisfaction that accompanies the
generalist's tasks." -- Tibor Scitovsky, _The Joyless Economy_, 1976:
1992 edition, p. 283.

Scitovsky is also the only economist I've read who refers to sexual activity.
