It makes me angry to hear these damned politicians conflate "fighting global warming" with "attaining energy independence" in order to justify ethanol. Ethanol DOES NOT help fight global warming at all. Hello, using involves burning it, which produces CO2... And "energy independence" is just a slogan for the worst kind of economic protectionism.

HARSH REALITIES IMPINGE ON EARLY PROMISE
"...But in the past few months many claims made for biofuels have been shown to be out of touch with reality. The first- generation biofuels, grain ethanol and biodiesel, are costly, often of questionable environmental merit, and cannot replace a fraction of world demand for oil.
Brazilian ethanol from sugarcane, a cheaper and cleaner althernative, is viable domestically but held back by trade barriers....."

Of course the sugarcane to ethanol production process only increases the power of latifundismo in Brazil, and there is no poverty like the poverty generated by sugarcane...
It's all about cash, that mean green. The peak issue is that of the rate of return on investment.
