Re: Armenian "genocide"



I don't know enough about the deaths of large numbers of Armenians in
Turkey about a century ago to conclude that it was genocide (or
otherwise), but I have a question:

why doesn't the current government of Turkey (1) admit that genocide
happened and then (2) blame the Ottoman Empire for doing it? It would
make it easier to get into the EU, among other things.

The movie "Screamers" deals with question one. There would be immense financial liabilities associated with admission of guilt. But more importantly, you are dealing with extreme nationalism. Also, it is not quite the Ottoman Empire at this point but the "Young Turks" who overthrew the Ottomans.
