The smear campaign from the "liberals", not just against Ralph Nader but against anyone marginally leftist such as Kucinich, is already underway. The reasoning is claimed to be "pragmatic" and "gradualist" but the rhetoric is vicious and exclusionary.
As opposed to such "liberal" outlets as the "netroots", the few of us who may consider ourselves left of such "pragmatic liberalism" are ill-organised and ill-focused. If we are (in terms of principles) the equivalent, for the left, of the radical wings of the right (choose from any of religious right, libertarians, etc), then the comparison casts an even poorer light on us.
Back when I was active in Solidarity, I proposed that, after the 2004 elections, we work with other socialists and leftists who believe the Democratic Party will not help end the war and together organize a national conference so we won't be so ill-organized and ill-focused. For various reasons, internal and external, that didn't happen. French leftists to the Left of the SP couldn't come up with a unity candidate either this year, but they, keen on keeping the momentum going after the No vote on the European constitution and the anti-CPE victory, at least gave it a shot and had many meetings trying to find one. -- Yoshie <http://montages.blogspot.com/> <http://mrzine.org> <http://monthlyreview.org/>
