There is one outstanding reason why the US went to war and that is control
of oil and to secondary degree oil per se. Now control comes as it has been
in the gulf way before the end of the cold war, a strong military presence,
i.e. Saudi had 20,000 US military experts on average for a long time.

that reminds me: one (minor) reason why the US elite wanted to invade Iraq was to find a new place to put the US military forces in the Middle East. Having them in Saudi Arabia was causing all sorts of problems, including the building of support for Osama bin Laden. (One of his big causes used to be "US out of SA!")

Of course, with the benefit of hindsight, it turned out that the
invasion of Iraq made this problem even worse, by creating major
direct contact between arrogant American troops and the Iraqi populace
and by creating a place where "jihadists" could practice and prove
their stuff.
