Under the doctrine of separation of church and state, workers choose their own churches, so attacks on "the church," "religion," etc. in the abstract will not get very far, for most workers, who are religious, take such attacks for attacks on them and their faiths. But most Anglo Marxists don't understand different contexts require different approaches to workers' faiths.

In the USA, Marxists might, for instance, aim for separation of church
and science instead. For most denominations of most religions have no
problem reconciling their faiths with science in practice and only
Christian fundamentalists have trouble doing so.
