Venezuela's Biggest Employer Is Social Services, Universal Says
By Theresa Bradley
Feb. 22 (Bloomberg) -- Venezuela's social services sector employs 31.1
percent of the labor force, or more than 3.4 million people, making it
the biggest generator of jobs in the economy, El Universal reported,
citing data from the National Institute of Statistics.
That marks a 2.6 percent increase in the number of Venezuelans in
social service jobs from 2005, as more people go to work for President
Hugo Chavez's community councils and neighborhood projects, the
newspaper said.
The commercial sector was the second largest employer with 2.6 million
workers, 23.8 percent of the working population, in the second half of
2006, the newspaper said. About 62 percent of those jobs were informal
-- without benefits or labor law protection, the newspaper said.
Industry and manufacturing was the third largest employer, with 1.3
million workers, or 12 percent of the labor force, in the second half
of 2006, the newspaper said. Manufacturing jobs grew by 7 percent over
2005, faster than any other sector, the newspaper said.
