National Priorities Project: Projecting Higher State/Local Costs For Iraq War

With the Senate's passage today of $70 billion in new war spending, the
total amount allocated or spent on the Iraq War has reached $378 billion.

Breakdowns of what the Iraq War would cost each state, congressional
district and hundreds of cities can be found in NPP's state-level
publication Cost of Iraq War Rises Higher
<http://nationalpriorities.org/iraqwarcost>.

Each publication also provides the number of U.S. soldiers killed and
wounded from each state and a summary presentation of how the Iraq War
has undermined U.S. national security.

With this latest appropriation, the total war cost will be up to $378
billion. After passage by the Senate (the bill was already passed by the
House on Tuesday), the legislation goes to the President for immediate
approval. Meanwhile, U.S. security declines as the number of dead and
wounded in Iraq rises.

As always, please let us know how you use your state publication or
local numbers and please pass them on as a resource to others.

Anita Dancs, NPP's research director, provided testimony at a
Congressional forum on September 26th on the opportunity costs of the
Iraq War.

Her complete testimony was covered on TomPaine.com and can be found at

Another notable publication:

The Security Policy Working Group, a consortium of security policy
groups of which NPP is a member, has just released Are We Safer? Five
years after the September 11th Attacks: Assessing the U.S. Security
Situation and Alternatives for Moving Forward.

NPP's Anita Dancs authors an article which challenges current policy on
homeland security entitled "Terrorism or all-hazards? Broadening
homeland security."
