Commentary on a debate
http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2008756
A few things, the article that was posted as well as the OPs highlights,
are somewhat misleading. The poll in question points out that "A majority
said they would be willing to suffer through a bad economy if that were the
price the country had to pay to develop its nuclear program."
Interestingly enough, Yoshie Furuhashi has, correctly in my opinion, put a
pro Ahmadinejad spin on this poll.
I've been following the issue of Ahmadinejad alot recently because of a
heated debate over the past few months on the Progressive Economists
Network and Marxmail mailing lists between Yoshie (loves Ahmadinejad) and
Louis Proyect (hates him).
Those who want to learn about Iran would do well to read Yoshie's blog as
well as Proyect's excellent post on this issue.
Proyect is probably right and certainly less hysterical than Yoshie,
although the latter has made some very strong if not completely convincing
arguments in favor of what I would have considered outrageous positions
(the Islamic world being more tolerant than anywhere else with regards to
non-homosexuals; Iran having the world's most progressive AIDS policy)
