Which leads me to state the corollary of the (alleged) Samuel Langhorne Clemens quote "...lies, damn lies, and statistics".
"Figures don't lie, but liars do figure."
Another Mark Twain* quote: "A half truth is a whole lie". Which can be done as easily with words as numbers. Which in turn makes those both the "lies" and "figures" quotes half truths.
*I refer to Mark Twain rather than Sam Clemens. Twain was the name most of his work was published under; the Twain persona was an important part of his writing style. Towards the end of the 19th century, Shaw wrote a letter to Mark Twain, explaining that he addressed Mark Twain and not Samuel Clemens because he did not know the second fellow.
