In repsonse to a question from a friend about the
Mexican elections, I offered the following very short
roundup -- your reactions will
There will be a lot of mobilization -- but without
much effect and then a long period of relative
political instability, with an exaggerated misuse of
public resourcces for the benefit of a small coterie
of the inner cicle. The resort to the brute force of
the state to repress social movements and local
demands will grow; one of the major growth industries
will be state-private controlled drug trade (with full
participation of the police and military forces) and
drug consumption induced at a local level.
