The statistics about the number of Indians living on a dollar a day are meaningless. All it shows that India is still a poor country. It hides the fact that India is markedly less poor than before. -raghu.
Actually, most countries are less poor than they were in the past, even Haiti. The real question is not whether India is going "backwards" or "forwards". It is rather whether it will ever become a *developed* nation. That seems excluded.
