I would assume that Whites during the segregationist period in the South would not want to
let it be known that they favor equality for Blacks. Similarly, in Jim's example, I would
imagine that many boys would not want to say that they approve of the gay life style for
fear of stygmatizing themselves.
Even after elections are over, many people deny having voted for the losing cause.
