Look. I don't think leftists should waste and/or misdirect their
energies by 'engaging' with the formal DP leadership _at an level_. (I
tried it during the Jackson campaign of '88 and nothing came of it.)
That is, I see no significant split within the formal structure of the
DP. I don't think there will _ever_ be such a split. A real leftist
movement in the U.S. will have to grow over the wreckage of the DP as a
national party.
BUT there can be and _are_ distinctions to be made in the case of
organizations only informally tied to the DP. In many localities one
really can work with local MoveOn people, and even if the primary MoveOn
activists themselves remained tied to the DP, the many people one meets
and works with through such cooperation with MoveOn are a quite
different matter. We should regard MoveON the same way we regard local
activists in unions. Working with them does not tie us in the least to
the formal leadership of those unions at any level.
