Re: Iran's 2005 Presidential Election

<<Can you tell us about the "reform" candidate?>>
The physician Mostafa Moin is the reformist candidate, who has served as the
chancellor of a major university, a member of parliament for three periods,
and a minister of both ex-president Hashemi-Rafsanjani's and president
Khatami's cabinets in the post-revolutionary Iran. Two years ago he resigned
from the ministry of higher education because his plane for restructuring
universities and higher education in general had been illegally prevented by
VIP.
Having been completely disqualified by the conservative Guardian Council in
the pervious parliament election, the reformists decided to present a person
as the presidential candidate who cannot be disqualified by the Guardian
Council, thereby appointing Moin as the candidate of the most important
reformist party, even though there are other political figures.
Nevertheless, the Guardian Council initially rejected Moin's candidacy but
finally was made to accept it.
Economically Moin has announced Stiglitzian Good Governance as his economic
slogan. Undoubtedly he holds a neo-liberal approach. Politically he stands
by democracy and human rights, announcing that he will not accept illegal
orders of the Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, the head of fundamentalist front.
Also Moin has acknowledged the right of protest for workers, an
unprecedented statement in the Islamic Republic. Several weeks ago his
speaker, Mrs. Koulaee, told that women must be free to decide on their
HIJAB, a key tenet in the regime and Islam in general.
On the whole, Moin is a continuation of the president Khatami who has been
practically unable to implement his reformist agenda.
