Re: Cinderella Man
I'm curious. I've read a number of reviews of this film, and not one of
them mentions, even parenthetically, that Louis (not Lewis) won the
heavyweight championship by knocking out Jim Braddock. There is a
footnote to that also, though I'm depending on a vague memory here:
Under ordinary circumstances, it would have been Schmeling, but there
was a rumor that if Schmeling won, he would take the championship back
to Germany. To prevent that Braddock scheduled Louis for the next title
bout.
One of my earlist memories is "missing" the radio broadcast of the
Louis-Schmeling bout. I was out on the front lawn at my grandmother's;
some called out, the fight is starting. By the time I got in the house,
the fight was over.
