While I am sure Dean provides a certain level of emotional satisfaction to the faithful, a job of the party chair is, I would think to, to expand the party. And if you are the minority party, as the Democrats presently are, that almost by definition requires a certain percentage of Republicans to switch ships, especially in large regions of the country. I doubt insulting the people you want to convert is very effective. The Republicans appear to be much more serious about figuring out how to attract existing Democratic constituencies than the Democrats are about attracting Republicans.
