Re: Lists of PhD programs

I am compiling a list for someone not on the list and would appreciate
receiving off-list either a pointer to or some recommendations for heterodox
PhD programs in the USA that combine political economy, environmental

at the UMKC list and wonder if there's faculty in places like public policy,
ag/resource econ or geography that don't have enough critical(sic) mass at
their university in their econ departments, but perhaps have senior faculty
housed in other departments that would support a graduate student
application with a combination of those interests.
Thanks

I'm not familiar with what it's like now, but Syracuse University's
geography department was decent--although their best, John Agnew, is now at
UCLA. The econ department was heavily rational-choice theory, with one lone
Marxist. Great guy, though. They do have a decent Environmental Studies
program--it's part of the SUNY system, but housed at SU. They also have a
conflict resolution program and an established social science Ph.D., so
they're used to students who work with faculty across the disciplines. Mark
Rupert, who used to sub to LBO, is in the Poli Sci dept, a Gramscian, does
good work.
SU, though, is pretty conservative and the Maxwell School Citizenship and
Public Affiars is mainly full of policy wonks, so it's not a school where
you'll find a lot of Marxists.
Linda Alcoff (Phil) is pretty strong on Marxist philosophy, though she also
dabbles in postmodernism. Her husband, Larry Alcoff, works with the upstate
chapter of SEIU, good guy.
Can't think of anything else. But, you should know that they get a lot of
snow: like 28 inches and more. :)
