It (or a similar statement) is also included in a book he published. The
book is hard to get hold of. When I wanted it some 20 years ago I had to
do through inter-library loan, and the only library in the state of
Illinois that had it was at Northern Michigan University in DeKalb. Not
even the U of I in C/U had it, and it is one of the three or four
largest in the u.s. I can't remember its exact title now.

Google him and you get a large number of hits. Including several that
refer you to the USMC web site for more material. He was the only person
ever to win the Congressional Medal twice. He is still raved about to
recruits in marine basic training, though they don't mention this part
of his story.
