Social Security Op/Ed Offer

Calling progressive economists ...

As you know, relying on inaccurate public fears of an imminent crisis in the Social Security program, President Bush is expected to move quickly to push "reforms" that would undermine this very important program.  It is crucial that we educate grassroots, media, advocates, and policy makers regarding the basic facts about Social Security - particularly that it is NOT facing a crisis and ought to be defended.

I encourage you to weigh in with an Op/Ed defending Social Security and pointing out the health of the program to help change the terms of this debate.  We at the Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR) have some sample op/eds available and are offering assistance in getting op/eds placed in media outlets.

Please let me know if you would be interested in writing an op/ed on Social Security and I can send you some helpful materials for framing the issue (my contact information is below).  You could also be in touch with our media coordinator, Debi Kar, at kar@xxxxxxxxx  And please, if you know anyone else who might be interested, pass this along.

In the meantime, CEPR Co-Director Dean Baker has put together a Social Security Fact Sheet that summarizes the basic facts of Social Security's economic viability.  It is available at: http://www.cepr.net/publications/facts_social_security.htm or in PDF at: http://www.cepr.net/publications/facts_social_security.pdf

All the best,

Patrick McElwee
