A case in point: Arnold Kling (according to his personal webpage) made a smallish fortune as part of the dot-com boom (to his credit, his own accounting says this was without having talent or good judgement). The new inequality has, among other things, created a large new power base that will spend lots of time and money defending their new privileges. No fervor like the newly converted ... or newly rich.
