That makes sense, though it might have applied a bit differently to what
was called the avant-garde at the close of the 19th & the beginning of
the 20th c. An "advanced guard" ought to be in advance of something
signifciant following? :-) And that could be said of a number of
musicians, writers, and painters from that earlier period, but since
then "avant-gardes" haven't been in advance of much besides more of
themselves!
