Subject: Join us to Hear President Hugo Chavez in NYC!
It's just been confirmed that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez will
be visiting the US. He will be speaking in NYC on Monday September 20
at Riverside Church in New York City at 7pm. The Global Women's
Strike Bolivarian Circle is part of the Coalition to Welcome Chavez
and we are organizing a bus from Philadelphia for those who want to
go to NYC for this historic occasion. You are invited to join us.
President Chavez will be addressing the UN on Tuesday September 21
and there are support demonstrations planned outside the UN from
11am-6pm that day. As you may know, following a massive grassroots
mobilization largely led by women, President Chavez won a referendum
on August 15 by a landslide. On the bus we will be celebrating this
latest victory, and sharing news and information on the Bolivarian
process.
The cost of the bus is $15 and the plan is to depart from
Philadelphia in the afternoon on Monday (probably around 2 or 3pm).
We will leave NYC immediately after the event which probably won't
end until 12 midnight. Please contact us at 215-848-1120 or
philly@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx with your name, address and phone number
if you would like to join us.
If you live in the New York City area or elsewhere and plan on
getting there on your own, but want to attend the event with us,
please let us know. We will also arrange a meeting place so that you
can sit with the Philadelphia delegation. You can also call
800-436-7082 (when asked for a PIN enter 2065949 and #) to reserve
tickets which would need to be picked up in NYC prior to the event.
No tickets will be available at the door. Everyone reserving tickets
will need to give their name, address and phone number, and show
photo ID at the door.
No cameras, cell phones or other electronic devises will be allowed
in the event. People are asked not to bring backpacks or bags. Entry
will be denied to anyone who doesn't comply with the security rules.
As you may remember, President Chavez was due to visit New York last
year for the annual United Nations meetings, but his trip had to be
cancelled due to threats to his life. The Coalition to Welcome Chavez
at the time issued an international petition condemning the actions
of the US administration that prevented him from coming. We are
concerned that there will be no repeat this time.
The US has backed a coup in April 2002, an oil coup in Dec 2002 and
various other attempts to bring Chavez down, including funding the
opposition in Venezuela that called (and lost) the referendum. We
will shortly be issuing a statement protesting the latest US move to
undermine the revolution by imposing sanctions on Venezuela on
spurious allegations of trafficking in women. This will be a
statement that you can sign onto, and we hope you will.
