Well, why did many non-slave-owning whites support slavery?  Why did
many white workers support Jim Crow?  Why did many men discourage
women from entering into male-dominated professions?  It's a mixture
of economically "rational" and "irrational" elements.  The
economically "rational" part is the desire to limit competition.
