?Fouling the Nest: How Right Wing Extremism Threatens American Prosperity?
Thursday, September 16, 2004, 7:00-9:00pm
Sierra 2 Center, Green Room, 2791-24th Street, Sacramento
The right-wing takeover of the U.S. was carefully engineered by a small
group of business interests beginning in the 1970s. Michael Perelman
explores how a combination of well-financed think tanks, racist demagoguery,
and sophisticated political maneuvering promoted policies to counter a
falling rate of profit and the modest left-wing successes of the 1960s.
These destructive policies have undermined the quality of people?s health,
safety, environment, and education. But in the long run, Perelman argues,
these policies also threaten the very foundations of American capitalism.
Michael Perelman (Ph.D., Berkeley) is Professor of Economics, California
State University, Chico, and author of 16 books, including The Perverse
Economy: The Impact of Markets on People and the Environment (2003), The
Pathology of the U.S. Economy Revisited (2nd ed., 2002), The Invention of
Capitalism: Classical Political Economy and the Secret of Primitive
Accumulation (1999), and Class Warfare in the Information Age (1998).
