Why does it have to be a political party (e.g., the Greens)? A "third" party automatically gets into the trap of being accused of being spoilers (e.g., Nader). Why not pressure the political system from the _outside_ (e.g., ACORN)?

I don't think the long-lost and now-being-lost progressive reforms of the New Deal arose from pressure from "third" parties as much as from veterans' marches, sit-down strikes, Hoovervilles, etc.
