Beslan: the real international connection
by Brendan O'Neill
There is a deep flaw in this article. It makes an amalgam between the
KLA, which did receive Western backing, and the Chechen guerrillas who
were characterized by Bill Clinton as the equivalent of the Dixie rebels
who needed to be suppressed by Russia's Abe Lincoln--Boris Yeltsin.
There is no evidence that the Cruise Missile left has rallied around the
Chechen cause as it did in Kosovo or Bosnia. One analyst asserted that
the neoconservatives have taken up the Chechen cause as a way of
continuing the Cold War. If so, the current government in Washington,
which would seem to embody this outlook, has confined its involvement in
this conflict to words alone. When the Soviets invaded Afghanistan, the
USA instituted serious economic sanctions and openly put the CIA to work
in backing the Islamic opposition to Kabul. Except for some of the more
bizarre Internet outlets such as Jared Israel's website, this is not an
accepted view.
